Every climb is guided and overnight: climbers must be accompanied by accredited guides at all times3, and since 2015 nobody can climb to the summit and back down in one day4.

Types of trip

Packages split into the Sabah Parks package, tour company climbs, Via Ferrata climbs and day tours for people who stay below the summit trail. The table compares what each costs and covers.

Which one fits you

The right trip depends on your budget, how much you want arranged and whether you climb at all.

  • Lowest price, some legwork: the Sabah Parks package covers one night, three meals, the permit and insurance1. You bring cash for the guide, the Timpohon Gate transfer and any porter1.
  • Everything arranged: a tour company climb adds the Timpohon transfer, a mountain guide, insurance, the permit and a certificate8.
  • More time on the mountain: mountkinabalu.com’s longer climb spends two nights at Panalaban base camp2. Viator also sells a longer guided climb.
  • Something steeper: Via Ferrata packages bring a Via Ferrata trainer as well as a mountain guide9.
  • Experienced climbers: the 5D4N Four Peaks Adventure2 is the longest package listed.
  • Not climbing: day tours usually include admission fees and hotel pickup, sometimes with a stop at Poring Hot Spring10.

KAYAK suggests at least one whole day11 in Kundasang, so a night in one of the Kundasang hotels pairs well with a day tour or a climb.

You need no specialised mountain climbing skills, but Wikivoyage warns that the fit will find the climb from Laban Rata a challenge and the unfit will find it almost impossible4. The mountain is high enough to cause altitude sickness4, so read how hard the climb really is before you pay.

For families, Amazing Borneo counts climbers under 16 as children, each with a separate mountain guide12. Sabah Parks sets one guide for two climbers aged 15 and below7.

How a standard climb runs

A standard tour company climb starts and ends at your Kota Kinabalu hotel, with a shared return hotel transfer8 in the price.

  1. Pickup in Kota Kinabalu

Shared pickup from your hotel between 06:00 and 07:00.

  2. Briefing at Timpohon Gate

Transfer to Timpohon Gate with your guide and a rules briefing, then the ascent to Panalaban.

  3. Up to Laban Rata

Most people take 3 to 6 hours to reach Laban Rata Resthouse, at 3,270 m.

  4. Summit push

The summit ascent usually starts at around 02:00–03:00; the route is 8.72 km to the top.

  5. Down and back

The descent takes 4–5 hours; the last transport reaches Kota Kinabalu by 19:30 at the latest.

Transfers are shared (seat-in-coach), so expect a short wait8. Sabah Parks puts park headquarters about 92 km from Kota Kinabalu6, while Wikipedia gives 88 km13.

  • Via Ferrata with a resort night: pickup from a hotel or the airport is recommended for 12.30–14.00, with one night at Kinabalu Pine Resort9 before the mountain.
  • Making your own way: Amazing Borneo Tours runs a shared one-way shuttle to Park HQ from MYR 25014, or compare buses and drives from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang.

Pick the month before the operator: climbing weather is best around April, while November and December bring rain4. See when rain hits the Kinabalu trail.

What packages leave out

Even a full package leaves some costs to you. What is usually not covered:

  • Standard climb (mountkinabalu.com): airfares, tips, porter fees and alcoholic drinks8.
  • Mount Kinabalu Explorer (Borneo Travel Network): tips, airfare, tourism tax, optional tours and personal travel insurance15.
  • Sabah Parks direct: the mountain guide, the return transfer to Timpohon Gate and a porter1, paid in cash.

Packages fold the permit and insurance into the price. The guide, porters and room upgrades are where extras add up.

Cancellation and date changes

Book early and read the terms, because late cancellations cost most or all of the price. The climb is popular enough that you may need to book months in advance10, as only 130 people may climb each day3. International climbers must give a copy of their passport to reserve climb slots12.

Sabah Parks says cancellations of its climbing bookings are non-refundable1. mountkinabalu.com scales its charges by notice:
