About this guide

Updated October 2026

This is an independent travel guide to Mount Kinabalu, Kinabalu Park and Kundasang in Sabah, Malaysia. It is for anyone planning the climb or a stay near the mountain. It covers permits, routes, weather, food and places to sleep.

The site is not owned or funded by any operator, resort, booking agent or government body. It sells nothing and takes no bookings.

Where the facts come from

Every fact comes from a named public source. These include official and government sites, operators’ own sites, booking agents, Wikivoyage, Wikipedia and the news. Each fact is stored with its source link and a quote, and checked against the live page. An AI model (Anthropic’s Claude) writes the pages from these facts only, and a person reviews each page before it goes live.

How often facts are re-checked

The site gets a data refresh on a set cycle, and the table shows how often. Each refresh re-checks a batch of facts against their live sources, starting with the oldest and the most likely to change: prices, fees, timetables and opening months. It also checks the source links, the tour pages and the places to stay.

If a source no longer shows a fact, the fact is flagged, never quietly dropped. Then it is updated from the source, moved to a better source or taken off the page.

How tours and places are chosen

Tour links go to Klook, Viator and GetYourGuide. We may earn a commission when you book through them, and you pay the same price. A person picks each tour from the booking site’s list for this place and opens the tour page before linking it. The title must name the place, and the tour must not be marked unavailable. A tour whose page has gone is never linked. The booking site that listed the most tours here when the site was planned comes first, and the others follow a fixed default order.

MyTravelLane, a local operator, is linked on its own booking pages. It has no affiliate programme, and we earn nothing from it.

Places to eat and drink come from Google Maps listings around the main areas. A person opened and checked each one in a browser before it was shown. They are sorted by area, then by the places people search for by name, then by the Maps search order. They are never sorted by rating. Ratings are Google’s, and each shows the date it was read.

Places to stay are the ones people search for by name, with the most searched first. Their details come from the sources named on each card. None has a booking link yet. A link appears only after a person checks it in a browser and the booking site approves the site’s account.

Commission decides nothing here. Nothing is listed, ordered or left out because of what it pays, and no business pays to be listed or placed higher.
