Kundasang weather and Mount Kinabalu climate by month
When to go
For the best odds of dry days, go in February or August2, when rainfall in central Sabah is at its lowest. For a summit climb, aim for around April3.
- Drier climbing months February to April, June to September
- Wetter, monsoon months May, October to January
Best months for each goal
- Climbing the summit: around April3. The operator Mount Kinabalu Climb Centre says the summit can be climbed at any time of year4.
- Clear views of the peaks: any month, as long as you look early in the morning5.
- Festivals: Pesta Kaamatan, the Kadazandusun harvest festival, runs throughout May, with the biggest celebrations on 30 and 31 May6. In 20266 the main celebrations were held in Penampang.
- Mountain running: the Timpohon Run is on 17 October 20267 and the Climbathon, a 24.5 km race, on 18 October 20268, both at Kinabalu Park.
- Quieter stays: weekdays outside public and school holidays.
Months to avoid and why
- November and December: both bring rain3, the main reason climbers skip them.
- May and October: rainfall peaks in central Sabah2. October also has the main rain peak on Sabah’s northwest coast2.
- October to February: Wikivoyage says the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain to Borneo from October to February9.
Sources differ on how much this matters inland. MetMalaysia says hilly central Sabah, sheltered by mountain ranges, gets less rain than other regions, spread evenly through the year2. Showers tend to be intense but short9, even in the rainy season.
Crowds, traffic and booking
Kundasang fills up on weekends, public holidays and school holidays1, when almost all lodgings can be full. Kinabalu Park gets very full during spells of clear weather5. Check where to stay near Mount Kinabalu well before a holiday weekend.
In September 2026, the Daily Express reported Kundasang’s tourism association chairman saying congestion keeps recurring during school holidays, weekends and festive seasons10. The Kundasang to Ranau stretch is normally a 15-minute drive but can take up to two hours11 at peak times.
Month by month
The months differ in rain, not warmth. MetMalaysia puts the yearly temperature swing across most of Malaysia at less than 2°C2.

Temperatures from the park to the summit
Height sets the temperature here, not the month. The mountain’s climate runs from humid tropical at the base to alpine at the summit12.
| Place | Height | Temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Malaysian lowlands, for comparison | Sea level to low hills |
about 26°C at midnight to 32°C at noon9 |
| Kinabalu Park headquarters | around 1,520 m14 |
20–25°C5 |
| Kundasang | about 2,000 m1 |
nights down to 13°C1 |
| Summit, cooler months | 4,095.2 m14 |
−4 to 8°C, December to January12 |
| Summit, mid-year | 4,095.2 m14 |
3 to 12°C, June to September12 |
Sources differ on Kundasang’s height. Wikivoyage gives about 2,000 m1, while Wikipedia gives almost 1,900 m, the highest settlement in Malaysia15. Ranau, the town below in the same district, has a tropical rainforest climate with heavy rain all year16.
Does it snow on Mount Kinabalu?
Very rarely. Snow has been recorded three times, in 1975, 1993 and 202212. Frost and ice occasionally form at the summit12, and temperatures on the mountain can fall below 10°C9.
Most climbers spend the night at Laban Rata Resthouse, at 3,270 m12, so pack warm layers for the hut and the summit.
Cloud, mist and rain through the day
The summit is usually covered in cloud5, so the time of day matters as much as the month.
- Early morning: the best time for a view5 of the peaks.
- Mid-morning: mist usually rolls in and hides the views5.
- On the drive up: Wikivoyage warns the weather turns first to mist, then to heavy rain1 on the way to Kundasang.
The road from Kota Kinabalu takes about 2 hours via Tuaran17. The Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang travel times page covers the routes.
Closures
Summit closures follow the weather on the day, not the calendar.
The climb operator Mount Kinabalu Climb Centre says bad weather closes the summit on average about 15–20 times a year4. Mesilau has been shut since the earthquake of 5 June 201512, so climbs start from Timpohon Gate18.
