Timpohon summit trail
The standard climb, with no specialised skills needed
- 8.72 km from Timpohon Gate to the summit
- Night at Laban Rata Resthouse, 3,270 m
- Non-heated dorm bunks, shared bathrooms
Both choices are overnight climbs, because since 2015 a summit-and-back climb in one day has not been possible2. The via ferrata versions add a protected climbing route on the rock. The name is Italian for “iron path”5.

Mount Kinabalu is on the island of Borneo, in Sabah, inside Kinabalu Park, a World Heritage Site6. The park headquarters are about 92 km from Kota Kinabalu7.
Minivans leave when full and take about 1.5 hours; buses from the North Bus Terminal take 1–2 hours.
Transfer to the gate with your guide for a rules briefing, then start the ascent to Panalaban.
Most climbers stop overnight at Laban Rata Resthouse, about 6 km up, at 3,270 m.
Carry on to Low's Peak at 4,095.2 m; the route is 8.72 km from the gate.
On the standard tour package, climbers sleep in non-heated dormitory bunk beds with shared bathrooms at Panalaban8. Sabah Parks’ own climbing packages use Lemaing hostel or Panalaban Hostel and last 2 days / 1 night1.
Sources differ on difficulty. Amazing Borneo calls it a moderately challenging trek that needs reasonable fitness9, while Wikivoyage warns it can be strenuous2.
Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Malaysia and Maritime Southeast Asia6. The page on Malaysia’s tallest mountain and its height covers fitness and altitude in more depth.
The via ferrata runs on a strict clock, so slower groups should think twice before booking the longer route.
Sabah Parks sets the permit, guide, insurance and conservation fees below. The package prices in the comparison table above come from the tour company mountkinabalu.com (Amazing Borneo Tours).

Most people should take the plain summit trail; the via ferrata routes suit climbers who want more time on the rock.

Add an extra night if the altitude worries you. The tour company mountkinabalu.com strongly recommends its 3-day/2-night package8 so climbers can get used to the height.
If the summit is not for everyone in your group, the Kinabalu Park sights and farms make a day out instead.
It carries real risks: altitude sickness is possible, two climbers died in February 2025, and the 2015 earthquake killed 18 people.
