Sabah Parks (official)

These rates come from the Sabah Parks climbing page, last updated on 16 October 20261. The Sabah Parks packages use either Lemaing Hut or Panalaban Hostel for the night on the mountain.

How to book a climbing permit

Every climb is a dated slot, and slots are scarce: only 130 people may climb each day3, because mountain hut beds are limited. The reservation runs from the booking window to registration on the day.

  1. Watch the booking window

Bookings for 2026 climbs opened on 1 December 2025 at 1:00 am. On 19 September 2026, 2027 bookings had not opened, which does not mean dates are full.

  2. Reserve online

Reservations are online only and depend on free slots. Sabapak Eco, a Sabah Parks subsidiary, handles them.

  3. Pay before time runs out

Unpaid reservations are cancelled without notice when the payment time runs out.

  4. Bring cash

Booking direct, bring cash for your guide, the return transfer to Timpohon Gate and a porter if you want one.

  5. Register on arrival

Check in at the Climbing Registration Counter in the Visitor Centre between 7:00 am and 10:30 am.

Pick your date with the Sabah highlands weather through the seasons in mind. Most climbers spend the night at Laban Rata Resthouse, at 3,270 m3, about 6 km5 up the trail.

Sabapak Eco also manages the Lemaing and Panalaban hostels1. Wikivoyage, though, says all accommodation inside Kinabalu Park must be booked through Sutera Sanctuary Lodges4, so confirm who holds your bed before you pay.

Changes, cancellations and refunds

A Sabah Parks booking is hard to undo: cancellations are non-refundable and climber names cannot be replaced1. Date changes are possible, with limits:

  • You can change the date once only1.
  • The new date must fall in the same year1, and depends on free slots and beds.
  • Sabah Parks needs at least two weeks1 of notice before the original climb date.
  • Each climber pays the date-change penalty shown in the fees table above.

Climb-day times and rules

The first day starts at the Climbing Registration Counter in the Visitor Centre, the park’s climbing office. From there your guide takes you to Timpohon Gate for a rules briefing, then the ascent to Panalaban2.

Day two: summit and descent

Plan the morning drive so you reach the counter in time: see reaching Kundasang from Kota Kinabalu.

On the mountain, these rules apply:

  • An accredited guide must be with you at all times3.
  • Stay with your group and assigned guide, and follow the guide’s instructions1.
  • Wear and display your permit tag1.
  • Show your permit at the Timpohon Gate, Laban Rata and Sayat-Sayat checkpoints7.

Before you book, read up on Mount Kinabalu’s height and difficulty.

The fee rise was the biggest change. The international adult climbing permit doubled to RM400 from 1 January 20238, the New Straits Times reported, and guide and entrance fees went up too.

Sources differ on when same-day climbs ended. Wikivoyage says a summit and return in a day has not been possible since 20155, while Sabah Parks dates its suspension of these permits to 1 December 20207.

On the Mesilau Trail, Sabah Parks still has a closure notice in place9. Its Mesilau pages are historical information, not an offer of current access or accommodation10.

Booking through a tour operator

An operator package is the alternative to booking direct. Amazing Borneo Tours sells these climbs on its site mountkinabalu.com, with these from-prices per person:

Package From, per person Source

MYR 2,64012
mountkinabalu.com (tour company)
Climb with Low’s Peak Circuit via ferrata
MYR 2,99013
mountkinabalu.com (tour company)

Both Via Ferrata routes have their own limits:

  • Walk the Torq is an introductory via ferrata, French grade PD12. Climbers must be at least 10 years old and 1.3 m tall14, and back at the start by 07:1512.
  • The Low’s Peak Circuit is an intermediate route of 4 to 5 hours, French grade AD13. The minimum age is 1615, and climbers must be back down by 06:3012.

Check an operator’s licence in the MOTAC travel agency directory16. Amazing Borneo warns that an operator confirming your date is available is not necessarily confirming your permit16. For trail detail, see how the Mount Kinabalu climb runs, gate to summit, or compare guided climb packages.
